Pacific Curls

The Wookey Hole Club are hosting another Take Art Gig – continuing the tradition of offering unique world music acts to Somerset Villages who would otherwise only  play in major cities or festivals.  Pacific Curls are a female trio comprised of Ora Barlow (Maori tradition), Kim Halliday (New Zealand/Scottish tradition) and Sarah Beattie (Scottish tradition)

With a cornerstone of backbeat Pacific rhythms, vivacious fiddle playing and evocative Māori instrumentation and lyrics, Pacific Curls have pioneered a fusion sound that seamlessly blend their indigenous roots of Pacific, Māori and Celtic cultures.

Classifying their sound is a challenge. Their use of jazz chordal transitions, traditional Celtic tunes, expressive vocals, political and moving lyrics in Māori and English, their use of world instruments with Pacific style beats and moods, shakes and bakes it all into a contemporary intriguing edginess.

With their World-ribbed sounds, precise arrangements and a catalogue of songs Pacific Curls – make music that is both worldly and enthralling. Over the years the three members have accumulated an impressive instrumental collection featuring the ukulele, cajon, fiddle, Taonga Puoro – traditional Māori instruments, guitar, stomp box, kalimba, various percussive instruments and vocals with lyrics in Te Reo Māori, Rotuman and English.

“They have played at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, WOMAD New Zealand and UK, the Ottowa Folk Festival and Borneo Rainforest Festival.  And so we are delighted to have been able to secure a booking via Take Art.  A Pacific atmosphere in the Club is very welcome at this time of year!” said Gary Amos one of the organisers.

We are proud to have been able to offer African, North American, Danish, Asian and now Celtic/ Pacific music to our audiences from the Take art Stable”

Tickets (£10) are available from the Take Art website, from the club or by contacting Jane on 01761 241753
